Thoughts on Democracy Now! Article - November 17, 2014
This piece takes a look into the story of Kaci Hickox, a nurse who returned home from West Africa after treating Ebola patients and was ordered to be quarantined in the state of New Jersey. Hickox felt that the quarantine was unwarranted and sought the help of civil rights attorney Norm Siegel, who threatened New Jersey governor Chris Christie who then released her from the quarantine. Hickox was allowed back to return to her home in Maine, where she defied the order to stay quarantined in her home. This article takes a look at the debate between politics and and public health, and questions the the role of the government in determining a person's state of health and the actions that should be taken. The article praises Hickox for standing up to these bullying politicians, but I can't help but wonder why she would not oblige to a 21 day quarantine in her Maine home (not the poor conditions of her New Jersey confinement) for the sake of the public health.

Environmental Semiotics Project - November 9, 2014
This work was inspired by Mierle Laderman Ukeles and her reaction to and work with the New York Department of Sanitation. She worked in exposing the work with waste to the public and educating them about the behind the scenes work. My reaction to Boneyard Creek was that it needs more exposure on campus and it has many other qualities than just a rocky creek. I wanted to create a promotional piece for Boneyard Creek and decided to research the fish which reside there. I created this work using Inkscape, and I really enjoyed creating it. I did not want to make a piece I felt resisted the nature of Boneyard Creek, but one that complimented it and highlighted information about it. I wanted to spotlight facts about Boneyard Creek the public might not be aware of. Researching and drawing the fish was a lengthy task, but one that has encouraged me to pursue potential graphic design projects like this in the future to improve my skills.

Today I came upon a mysterious object, it was hard, cold, and metallic. It was made of two parts: one a cool, ocean-colored hue in a curved shape, and the other a thin silver bar with notches on it. The silver bar was attached to the curved part, and could be adjusted up and down by way of a spinning handle. It appears as if it could be used to hold something down between the curved object and the silver bar. I imagine it might have been used in medical practices? It seems to be about the shape of a human mouth, and may have been used to hold it open during a dental exam or some other rudimentary medical procedure. I wish I had been able to see the other tools that would accompany this one, but alas I found this piece alone. I have no use for it, considering all medical and dental procedures are done via the computer these days. Maybe I will sell it to a museum.

Reviews from another Perspective - October 13, 2014
From someone I dislike:
Um, I wouldn’t watch “When We Were Kings” in my spare time. I’m not into boxing or anything like that, soooo I found it kind of boring. I didn’t even know who George Foreman was so I guess I learned something from it. I wouldn’t recommend it to my friends. Ummm I mean it was okay for a school movie.
From my Dad (Hero):
“When We Were Kings” was a pretty entertaining film. I remember when Ali and Foreman were in that fight, I think I was about 18 years old; the posters and interviews they chose reminded me of some I saw around that time. The film had some slower moments but overall I enjoy historical documentaries and this one kept my attention.

Reflection - September 24, 2014
When I first heard John Cage's "4'33''," I was somewhat upset and irate that I had to sit through its entirety because I felt like it was a cop-out to creating real music. My mindset beginning reading "Searching for Silence" for the homework was somewhat like this. My mind didn't change when reading the article, although I did find out that Cage created other more organized compositions using a variety of sounds, some classic, like piano, and other noises like radios and dogs barking. I don't think that I gained any value from the reading until I actually tried it out myself today - I felt that I gained more from the actual practice of gathering found sounds than just from listening or reading about it. It was fun to create and play with in Audacity, but I still have my reservations about this type of music, because I don't believe the sounds would be pleasing to anyone or that a person would voluntarily listen to it for pleasure. This assignment has, however, given me a lot to consider concerning the line between everyday life and art.

Reflections on class September 8, 2014
I was really excited to see the huge variety of pieces that people created for our homework assignment involving using the body in a work. When I began the assignment, I was at a loss. It took me awhile to realize that I wanted to use my face as a canvas, for both my makeup video and my Inkscape work. Viewing other's works was fascinating in what they chose to explore. I especially appreciated Keely's vulnerability in exposing her "flaws" in her photographs and highlighting them with paint. I also was in awe of the talent in Damaris's foot drawings and commend her on how detailed they are in that they depict wrinkles and shadows so realistically. I will use these projects as inspiration for my future works in this class because I learned new ways of making today.

Using the body to create a work of art - Homework September 8, 2014
In this project, I wanted to document how I perform the ritual of putting makeup onto my face. This is something that I perform all the time, but felt vulnerable and uncomfortable exposing the "behind the scenes process"! It was a great experiment to show how I alter my appearance and use certain tools to manipulate my body.
I am very comfortable with drawing my face with pen and pencil, but I wanted to branch out into a program that I am becoming more familiar with. Here I show my attempt at a self-portrait in Inkscape.

September 3rd 2014 – Reaction to Performance Art
Today I was exposed to the Fluxus art movement for the first time and saw videos about performance art that I did not quite understand: Yoko Ono blinking, Joseph Bueys fixing a TV, and a “car concert”. Through our activities today, I am starting to understand that these works are about what can be done with the body and how it is documented. Although I felt strange wiggling my body and jumping around, I saw how working as a group moving our bodies can be an act of art itself. When we got into smaller groups to create a video capturing a performance with our bodies, I struggled at first to come up with any ideas. However, we got creative and took a more humorous approach to the assignment and decided to use our thumbs as the features in the video. Although I felt as if performance art is not my cup of tea, I enjoyed the approach that my group took and had fun participating in it.
